About 2.5 kilometers to the north of Sumbawa Island, there is a beautiful island which is the main destination for foreign tourists when traveling to Indonesia. This island, which is administratively included in the Sumbawa Regency area, West Nusa Tenggara, is called Moyo Island. Moyo Island has an area of around 32,044 hectares with a maximum height of around 670 meters and has an extraordinarily beautiful coastline of 88 kilometers.
According to tourist guides on this island, Moyo Island is usually busy with tourists in the June-July period or when the dry season arrives. The reason is, during the dry season, the water on Moyo Island will look clearer and more beautiful. Moreover, the exotic underwater scenery of Moyo Island is added, which is one of the best in the world. Therefore, based on the Decree of the Minister of Forestry dated 29 September 1986, Moyo Island was designated as one of the marine natural conservation areas in Indonesia.
What makes the Moyo Island marine conservation area interesting and different from other underwater conservation areas is the sloping bottom of the waters of Moyo Island. The sloping contours of these waters mean that the beauty of Moyo Island’s underwater ecosystem can be seen even without diving. This underwater view will look more beautiful if it is assisted by sunlight falling on the bottom of the water where marine life lives.
Visiting the waters of Moyo Island will definitely not make you bored. The sensation of underwater beauty that this island offers will always be different and make anyone who comes here feel at home on Moyo Island for a long time.
In 1993, Princess Diana (Lady Di) visited Moyo Island in Sumbawa to calm down because her household with Prince Charles was not in harmony. Apart from Princess Diana, a number of world-famous artists were also found to have vacationed on Moyo Island,
including Rolling Stones vocalist Mick Jagger, Maria Sharapova, and singer and songwriter David Bowie.
One of the most famous waterfalls is Mata Jitu Waterfall, which is nicknamed Queen Waterfall. The name in foreign language spelling was given because the waterfall was once visited by Princess Diana. Mata Jitu Waterfall has many stalactites and stalagmites that decorate the surface of the waterfall. There are four steps and seven pools that make up this waterfall, as the name suggests “Mata Jitu” which means a waterfall that falls into the pool below. The water is clear and appears to be divided into several colors, namely green and turquoise.
There is not only one beautiful beach that surrounds this island. But there are several, such as the Takat Sigale sandbar area, Tanjung Pasir Beach, and Poto Jarum Beach. The beauty of these beaches is able to attract a number of world figures to travel there.
The best time to visit here is during the dry season or around April to July when the sea waves are relatively calm. Visitors can swim in the clear turquoise sea water and dive or just snorkel. They can enjoy underwater views with charming coral reefs which are home to various ornamental fish such as lion fish, clown fish or nemo fish, and others.
